TED Talks

A bit of a tip from a friend JT put me on the TED talks podcast. Although i had heard of it before and listened to a few, the convenience of a podcast has opened my world of portable entertainment.

TED is a conference (annual?), which gathers the brightest and smartest of people to discuss all kinda of issues of the world. The talks are always interesting, short and really fascinating no matter what the person is discussing. Maybe it's the prestige of TED thats makes the speakers look good, but ive been truly impressed by every speech i've listened to so far.

This one is one of my favourites. Just imaging a room of the smartest logical scientific people of our age just totally outdone and bamboozled by a magician. I can't stop thinking about how he did the tricks he did. I know it's an illusion, i know it's sleight of hand, i know i'm being shown only half the story. But knowing what i know, i still can't figure it out.

It's such a metaphor for science and the pursuit of knowledge, we may think we know this world and know all it's mysteries. It's a deck of cards and a guy, there are no unknowns here. Yet, this man shows us, that in truth we know very little about the potential for a guy and a deck of cards.
