Gave blood today, for the first time. I'd like to say my motivations were altruistic but in truth i only wanted to know my blood type. I'm suppose to know and i find it quite disturbing that i dont. Anyways, it was an interesting experience, besides the 1hr long interview process where i had to regurgitate my travel and medical history for the past year. That was very boring indeed, except i got some nice personal statistics out of it, 67.3 kg BP 105/75 and HG of 156 and pulse of 61/sec. I'm not actually sure what these numbers translate to, but apparently they are good numbers =)
So like cats, i was basically curious about the entire process of giving blood. Although i was advised to look away as the stabbed me, I was too curious about it to look away. Gosh its a bloody big arse needle. It's bigger then the needles you use to pump up basketballs and it was halfway into my arm *freaky*. The wound doesnt behave like a cut where you would expect it to bleed all over the place, rather it just goes straight into the tubes and into the bag. Like siphoning petrol, my dark red blood was being pulled out of me.
Once you get over the sting of it, it just becomes a game where you try to get the fastest flow rate possible =P (61!) Also i didnt get any of the side effects of giving blood, such as light headedness, tiredness or loss of concentration. I actually felt no different at all.
It was very interesting observing all the different people that come in to give blood as well. It wasn't the people you expected, it seemed to be a random sample of the general population, business people, students, unemployed, construction workers, anyone and everyone. It was good to see that people from all walks of life, take time out of their day to help others. Now that i'm on the other side, it seems like such a human thing to do. It costs nothing, it benefits other people and you get food at the end, so why not?
Give Blood!!!
